About Latex Mattresses – ‘Dunlop’ vs. ‘Talalay’
.
For those new to latex mattresses there are essentially two types…Dunlop or Talalay. The difference is how the mattress is constructed.
First, consider this about all-natural latex mattresses. Latex is natural rubber. Unlike like memory foam mattresses they are free of toxic materials. Memory foam mattresses often have a number of potentially toxic materials such as formaldehyde which many believe can leech out of the mattress. Natural Latex is a premium, clean material and to this writer who has been sleeping on a Talalay mattress for over 20 years , extremely comfortable. Generally latex mattresses are more expensive, although the Eco Terra mattress is reasonable priced. Remember, since the Eco Terra latex mattress is 3 inches of latex on an innerspring, the mattress is therefore not prohibitively expense.
Understanding the use of the word ‘Latex’
.
There are 3 basic types of latex mattresses, as follows (1) 100% Natural (2) Blended, and (3) Synthetic. Take note that many blended latex mattress companies identify their mattress as ‘natural’ but what you should look for is a latex mattress that is 100% Natural. In other words, look for all natural latex and nothing else. If the product is 100% natural latex you will be getting a 100% plant based product with nothing else. The best, highest rated latex mattresses are made of 100% natural latex.
And remember, latex mattresses can be made of either Talalay latex or Dunlop latex. Both can be 100% natural with the difference being the construction. The most premium of the two types is Talalay but either can be an excellent choice as a 100% natural latex mattress is one of the only completely organic mattresses available to consumers.
Latex is made from the sap of the rubber tree—a white, milky substance that is used for a number of different products.
The Dunlop process is a simpler process than that of the Talalay process and therefore is less costly. The Dunlop process has been used for about a hundred years. What happens is the rubber tree sap is poured into a mattress cast and heated to remove moisture. The Talalay process is more complex. Both are extremely comfortable. The Talalay tends to compress less over time.
The bottom line is that the Dunlop latex mattresses are less expensive while the Talalay mattresses are more durable. Either are excellent choices.
